Structural Advanced Engineering

Advanced structural engi-neering is becoming a critical part of the oil and gas industry as they face more technical challenges in the pursuit of reserves in deeper water or harsher environments and remote areas of the world.

  • Extreme loads - Waves, currents, winds, earthquake, blast, fire, collision

  • Fatigue - fatigue analysis and fracture mechanics

  • Unusual problems - damage, connections, settlement, cryogenic, etc.

Energo's core capability is Structural Advanced Engineering and it can be found in all of our work.  We apply both the state-of-practice and the state-of-art approaches to solve structural problems and find workable solutions for our clients.  We are known for thinking out-of-the-box and bringing resolution to structural problems that could not be solved by others.

It goes beyond just advanced analysis - we balance basic engineering principles with code requirements.  We are not only familiar with most international structural engineering codes (API, IBC, EURO, SNiP), but we are familiar with the background and basis of these codes.  Most of our senior staff is or has been involved with development of onshore or offshore structural codes worldwide.

Examples of our Structural Advanced Engineering includes the following:

  • Wave and current (metocean) - linear design level and nonlinear ultimate strength (pushover)

  • Earthquake - API SLE and DLE, ISO ELE and ALE, LNG OBE and SSE, nonlinear pushover, well as nonlinear dynamic time history analysis, sloshing, FEA of highly loaded connections

  • LNG facilities - ships and onshore structures and tanks, earthquake including sloshing, thermal, cold spot, construction sequence

  • Fatigue - deterministic, spectral, S-N and fracture mechanics, FEA

  • Collision - fully nonlinear dynamic including material and geometric nonlinearity, FPSOs, ship tp ship, fixed platforms

  • Blast - onshore and offshore structures topsides, effect on buildings and members, equivalent static, fully dynamic blast wave, API RP2FB approaches

  • Fire - effect of pool and jet fires, thermal time exposure analysis, specify locations for PFP

  • Cryogenic - effect on members, thermal analysis

Energo uses a variety of software tools as applicable for the project.  We use the tool most appropriate for the situation.  Some of our basic commercial day-to-day tools, or tools that we have used in the past include the list below.  We also develop our own in-house special purpose post processors for these codes or we develop our own special purpose tools using codes such as MATLAB, MathCad and Excel:

  • ABAQUS

  • ANSYS

  • CAP (SeaStar)

  • Crystal Ball

  • FEMAP

  • Fracture Graphics (SignalFFS)

  • LS-DYNA

  • NASTRAN

  • SACS including COLLAPSE

  • STRUREL
